QR codes in Mailings on the Increase

If you have gotten any mail lately and thought that there has been a dramatic increase in the use of QR codes (aka mobile barcodes or 2D barcodes) your’re right, there has. The US Post Office is doing a Mobile Barcode Promotion which offers a 3% discount on mailing to those retailers who used QR codes on their mailing piece between July 1, 2011 and August 31, 2011. The goal of the Mobile Barcode Promotion is to build awareness of mobile barcodes and demonstrate to mailers how mobile barcodes can increase the value of mail, while “blurring” the lines between online and offline marketing.

Some maililng houses are also matching the 3% discount or applying their own discount during this time period to get more people mailing out now.

So keep a look out for innovative uses of QR codes on your mail this month and next and see where they drive you.

One Response to QR codes in Mailings on the Increase

  1. Hey Kim, Great post, and thanks for the mention! After writing that article I too have noticed so many QR codes on recent mailings, seems that everyone is taking advantage of this new discount. Let’s just hope that the USPS keeps coming up with ways to be innovative and generate more revenue, they need it!
